Travesía is a website put together by Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries. Basically the sites aims at promoting collaboration among Spanish librarians, and offers them a space to work together.

Information on the site is divided into three main categories; 1) Documentation that will aid collaboration among Spanish Librarians; 2) Publications by the Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries; and 3) Offers access to other relevant publications.

The site functions in all the official languages used in Spanish, plus English.

Travesía es un sitio web elaborado por la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España. Básicamente el sitios tiene como objetivo promover la colaboración entre bibliotecarios en españa y les ofrece un espacio para trabajar juntos.

Información en el sitio se divide en tres categorías principales: 1) Documentación que ayudará a la colaboración entre los bibliotecarios españoles, 2) Publicaciones de la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España, y 3) Ofrece acceso a otras publicaciones pertinentes.

El sitio funciona en todos los idiomas oficiales que se usan en españa, y en inglés.

This morning, bright and early, I attended an ALA Midwinter Conference session hosted by OCLC titled “Redesigning Technical Services Workflows.” The session was composed of three presenters, two of which shared their experiences on how their technical services departments are adapting to decreased budgets and new technology trends. The third presenter, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting), discussed a report she helped create which discussed the creation and use of bibliographic records in North America.

The main point of this presentation is that libraries all across North America are duplicating each others work when we could be working together to maximize the creation of bib. records for benefit of us all. Her presentation included some shocking numbers. The report concluded that there are about 34,000 original catalogers in North America, and that if each one cataloged only one item a day, every work day, that would produce 6 million new records a year! These numbered followed her pointing out that most libraries have growing backlogs! It seems most libraries are instructing the catalogers to bring in records from institutions like OCLC, alter them in the local catalog, and then not re-share the new record. This process is being repeated over and over in libraries all over the region.

The presentation went on to address the fact that many non-library users are starting to gather much of the information gathers in these MARC records and either using it for other purposes, or reselling it! And in a systems where the Library of Congress (LOC) ends up creating many of these records and them making them available to the library community at large, the LOC is basically subsidizing everyone’s cataloging, libraries, and non-libraries alike.

I’m not sure how we are going to get all, or even most libraries to start working more collaboratively, but I do know that we need to get working on this, instead of spending, who knows how many more years duplicating each others work.

Esta mañana, muy temprano, asistí a una sesión de conferencia del ALA Midwinter organizada por OCLC titulada “Rediseño de Servicios Técnicos y flujos de trabajo.” La sesión se compuso de tres presentadores, dos de los cuales compartieron sus experiencias sobre la forma en que sus departamentos de servicios técnicos se están adaptando a la disminución de presupuestos y las tendencias de nuevas tecnologías. La tercera presentadora, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting) examinó un informe que ayudó a crear que discutía la creación y utilización de registros bibliográficos en Norte América.

El punto principal de esta presentación es que las bibliotecas en toda Norte América están duplicando el trabajo de otros cuando podrían estar trabajando juntos para maximizar la creación de registros bibliográficos para beneficio de todos. Su presentación incluyó algunos números impactantes. El informe concluye que hay cerca de 34.000 catalogadores profesionales en Norte América y que si cada uno de ellos catalogara sólo un libro al día, cada día de trabajo, ¡se crearían 6 millones de registros nuevos al año! Fischer menciono estos números justo después de señalar que la mayoría de las bibliotecas tienen acumulación de material que no hay podido catalogar. Al parecer la mayoría de las bibliotecas están instruyendo a los catalogadores a que migren registros encontrados en instituciones como la OCLC, modificarlos en el catálogo local, y luego no volver a compartir el nuevo registro. Este proceso se repite una y otra vez en las bibliotecas de toda la región.

Otro punto de la presentación fue ilustrar el hecho de que hay una cantidad de usuarios, tanto bibliotecas, como otros, que están comenzando a recopilar toda la información que se reúne en estos registros MARC y los están utilizando para otros fines, ¡o los revenden! En un sistema donde la Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) produce muchos de estos registros y los ponen a disposición de la comunidad bibliotecaria en general, la LOC básicamente esta subvencionando la catalogación de todo el mundo, las bibliotecas y otras instituciones por igual.

No estoy segura de cómo vamos a conseguir que todas, o incluso la mayoría de las bibliotecas empiecen a trabajar en colaboración pero sé que tenemos que hacer algo al respecto. No tiene sentido alguno que pasemos quien saben cuantos años más duplicando nuestro trabajo.

It’s been almost fifty years since the Peace Corps first started sending volunteers around the world to help in a variety of projects. To commemorate this history and anticipating many new adventures to come, the Peace Corps has created a digital library which encourages current and past volunteers to submit photographs and stories of their experiences abroad. At the very minimum the collection wishes to gather photographs and stories from every country they have sent volunteers to, and every decade.

Over the years I’ve met a lot of Peace Corps volunteers, all with amazing stories; I’ve even the child of a former volunteer, so  I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this collection.

A Peace Corps Gringo in Colombia

Ya van casi cincuenta años desde que el Cuerpo de Paz comenzó a enviar voluntarios por todo el mundo para ayudar con una variedad de proyectos. Para conmemorar esta historia y proveyendo que habrán muchas aventuras por venir, el Cuerpo de Paz ha creado una biblioteca digital que alienta voluntarios actuales y pasados a presentar fotografías y relatos de sus experiencias en el extranjero. Como mínimo la colección desea recoger fotografías e historias de todos los países donde han enviado voluntarios, y de cada década.

A través de los años he conocido muchos voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz, todos con increíbles historias, incluso soy hija de un ex-voluntario; sin duda estaré mirando el desarrollo de esta colección.

RedEsColombia is an online platform that offers a space where Colombians around the world, and everyone one else interested in the country can interact, and share ideas. Ultimately the network hopes that these interactions will help bring about new ideas, and development for the country.

You do have to register to get the full benefit of the site. But once you are in you will find dozens of smaller networks divided my topic. There are several regional networks, with Colombian in Canada being quite visible. There are also networks based on common interests, such as education, and business.

The site is a little cumbersome to navigate, but it seems like a good resource for Colombians abroad wanting to keep in touch, and network with other compatriots in the area. It also offers a space for business development both in Colombia as well as abroad.

If you just want to take a look at the types of networks available click on the links on the left hand margin, not the ones of the top because those will ask you to register.

RedEsColombia es una plataforma en línea que ofrece un espacio donde los colombianos alrededor del mundo, y todos los demás interesados en el país pueden interactuar y compartir ideas. En definitiva, la red espera que estas interacciones ayuden a traer nuevas ideas, y el desarrollo para el país.

Usted tiene que registrarse para obtener el beneficio completo del sitio, pero una vez aceda al sitio encontrará decenas de redes más pequeñas divididas por tema. Hay varias redes regionales, con los colombianos en Canadá estando muy visible. Hay también redes basadas en intereses comunes, tales como la educación, y los negocios.

El sitio es un poco difícil de navegar, pero parece un buen recurso para los colombianos en el exterior que desean mantenerse en contacto, y crear contactos otros compatriotas en el área. También hay espacios para el desarrollo de negocios tanto en Colombia como en el extranjero.

Yesterday I got an email announcing the beginning of La Cuña, an online forum dedicated to librarianship for and about Latin American and the Iberian Peninsula. The forum wants to gather Latinoamericanist who wish to exchange information on collection development, reference, instruction or any other issue that may come up.

I hope people from around the world join the forum, the more of us join, the livelier the conversation.

BabelWithMe.com is a new method to communicate with people who don’t speak (or write) our same language. It seems very easy to use; just visit the site, choose a login name, and then email your partner the permalink you are assigned, and voilà!

I was trying to find examples of how people are using this, and all I found was this conversation titled IranElection. It seems that the other people logged in are maybe trying to see how BabelWithMe works. I logged into this conversation first in English, then in Spanish, and both times it gave me adequate translations for the conversation.

Simultaneous translations are provided by Google, which recently improved all its translating tools.

This could be a great tool for virtual reference.

BabelWithMe.com es un nuevo método para comunicarse con personas que no hablan (o escriben), nuestra misma lengua. Parece muy fácil de usar, simplemente visite el sitio web, elija un nombre de usuario y luego envié el enlace permanente que le ha sido asignado a su pareja, y voilà!

Estaba tratando de encontrar ejemplos de cómo la gente utiliza esto, y todo lo que encontré fue esta conversación titulada IranElection. Parece que los que están usando esta conversación lo está haciendo más que nada para probar la herramienta y ver cómo funciona. Google just announced on its blog that they are developing a new tool which aims at integrating email, live chat, photos, videos, maps, feeds, gadgets, and more! The idea is to centralize communication, but also to make collaboration easier.

Google acaba de anunciar en su blog que están desarrollando un nuevo sistema que integra email, chat, fotos, videos, mapas, feeds, gadgets, ¡y más! La idea es centralizar nuestras comunicaciones, y facilitar la colaboración.

Right now the project is still being developed, but they are looking for techy people who can help out. If you want to get involved check out their Google Wave Developers Blog, the Google Code Blog, as well as the Wave Federation Protocol. You can also sign up to be notified of Wave’s release here.

A user starts a “wave,” a new thread in the system. At first, it looks just like an e-mail. A wave usually starts as text, but photos can be dragged in, and videos or maps can be embedded. The user invites friends by dragging and dropping names from a list of contacts in a sidebar. New users can start leaving comments in line, setting a break point in the original text and adding a comment directly below the paragraph, photo or whatever piece of the wave they want to comment on. There’s even a built in spell-checker that’s context-sensitive.

ColombiaYa.com is a search engine for Colombians, by Colombians. The site will provide access to all things Colombian, starting with a crash course of the country’s government and history. You will also find news, culture, sports, government, entertainment, tourism, and so much more. The site also provides contact information for all the Colombian embassies around the world; useful information and documentation for Colombian living abroad; and direct links to all of the Colombian government’s websites, including the presidency, Colciencias, ICETEX, and ministry for education, among many others. The site allows for open discussion about Colombia, allowing users to share articles on any Colombian topic, and providing a space for chat. You’ll also find links to all the mayor radio stations. There is a calendar highlighting all the mayor holidays, including the many, many saints we honor. If you want to advertise an event that will interest the Colombian community, there is a page dedicated to this, although it is currently empty.

Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club is a partnership between Las Comadres, Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Borders to promote the reading of Latino writers.

The group meets once a month in a selected venue (usually a Borders book store) to discuss the previously selected book. Discussions are conducted in English as are the selected books, although many are available in Spanish as well. I assume this is done to make the group accesible to more people. The other neat thing is that whenever possible the author participates in these events as well, via teleconference.

Membership is open to everyone, and if you wish to join them for the next session the book currently being read is “Notorious“, by Michele Martinez; the meeting is March 30th. Here’s a list of all the venues nationwide.

Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club es una asociación entre Las Comadres, Association of American Publisher (AAP) y la tienda de libros Borders para promover la lectura de autores Latinos.

El grupo se reúne una vez al mes en un sitio designado (usualmente una tienda de Borders) para discutir el libro previamente seleccionado. Las discusiones son en ingles, así como los libros seleccionados, aunque usualmente los libros también se encuentran en traducciones al español. Otra cosa interesante de este proyecto es que cuando es posible el autor participa en los eventos, usualmente vía teleconferencia.

Membresía al grupo esta abierto a todos, y si desea atender la próxima reunión el libro a leer es “Notorious” de Michele Martínez. El grupo se reunirá el 30 de Marzo. Aquí encontrara la lista de todos los sitios de reunión alrededor del país.

Living Library is a project working to breakdown stereotypes and prejudice. The project is based on the simple notion of open dialog and interactions, with the aims that these will help dispel stereotypes and prejudice. The idea is to set up a space where people can speak informally with “people on loan” who come in a wide range of sex, age, and cultural backgrounds.

The idea of a Living Library started in Copenhagen, Denmark and has continues to spread across the world. Back in 1993 a group of friends saw the need to help end violence, after a fellow friend was stabbed. The incident motivated the group to do something to help raise awareness, and to help end violence, and did so by creating a group called “Stop The Violence”. Back in 2000 Leif Skov, director for the Roskilde Festival encouraged the group to create a space that would focus on anti-violence and encourage dialogue among festival attendees.

Activities for a Living Library meeting usually include a book that list a type of person (Muslim, Male Nanny, Lesbian, Vegan, Police Officer, Fat person etc) with a list of often associated concepts. Along with the book comes the real person who fits the title. The idea is to “borrow” this living book, and openly discuss the issues. All the “books” are volunteers, who have wished to contribute to the ongoing discussion to dispel stereotypes.

Over the year the Living Library project has continue to spread around the globe, and recently Lismore, Australia has become the first city to have a permanent Living Library. Other countries hosting such events include Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan. Spain, Romania, UK, and the USA, just to name a few. I do notice that the project has still not reached Africa, Central or South America, or Asia, but hopefully they will eventually make it out there.

Living Library (Biblioteca Viviente) es un proyecto que se dedica a romper estereotipas y prejuicios. El proyecto se bases en la sencilla noción de que el dialogo abierto nos puede ayudar a romper los estereotipas y prejuicios que todos llevamos consigo. La idea es ofrecer un espacio donde se puede conversar informalmente con personas que se “prestan”, y quienes vienen en toda variedad de sexo, edad, y culturas.

La idea de la Biblioteca Viviente empieza en Copenhagen, Dinamarca y continúa expandiéndose através del mundo. En 1993 un grupo de amigo se vio motivado a ayudar eliminar la violencia después de que uno de sus amigos fuera atacado. El incidente motivo al grupo a crear un grupo que ayudara a crear consciencia social, y a su vez ayudara a eliminar la violencia. Con esta idea empezaron un grupo llamado “Stop The Violence” (Pare la Violencia). Luego, en el 2000 Leif Skov, el director del festival de Roskilde animo al grupo a crear un espacio que ayudara a promover la no-violencia, e incitara a los visitantes del evento a empezar un dialogo.

Las actividades de un evento de Bibliotecas Vivientes usualmente incluyen un libro que lista clases de personas (musulmán, niñera hombre, lesbiana, vegan, policía, persona gorda, etc.) y luego lista conceptos usualmente asociados con esta persona. Junto con el libro viene una persona real. La idea es “prestar” el libro y abiertamente tener una conversación sobre el tema. Todos los libros son voluntarios; personas que desean contribuir a disipar estereotipas.

Através de los años el proyecto de Bibliotecas Vivientes continua creciendo, y recientemente la ciudad de Lismore, Australia se convirtió en la primera ciudad en tener una Biblioteca Viviente permanente. Otros países que tiene Bibliotecas Vivientes incluyen Canadá, Finlandia, Italia, Japón, España, Romanía, el Reino Unido, y los Estados Unidos, solo por nombrar algunos. Claro que si noto que el proyecto aun no llega al África, a Centro o Sur América o a Asia, pero ojala pronto lleguen.

Si le interesa visitar una Biblioteca Viviente o ser un Libro Viviente favor mirar la listo de proyectos ya establecidos. O de pronto se anime a crear un proyecto nuevo.
