Recently the Vanderbilt library has digitized and made available a portion of their material on Colombia, specializing in 19th century culture and history, titled The J. León Helguera Collection of Colombiana. Currently the collection is divided into three main categories; broadsides, 1825-1972; pamphlets (including novenas), 1785-1969; and programas, 1819-1914. The site also allows for easy browsing (by date, type, or subject), or detailed searching.

After some browsing through the collection I found a good variety of subjects covered, including the catholic church, the armed forces, slavery, education, social life, foreign relation, and politicians, among others.

Currently only about 60 documents are searchable, but the library is applying for grants, in hopes to continue expanding this project.

Hace poco la biblioteca de la universidad Vanderbilt ha digitalizado y puesto a disposición parte de su material sobre Colombia, especializándose en la cultura e historia del siglo 19, bajo el titulo de The J. León Helguera Collection of Colombiana. Actualmente la colección está dividida en tres categorías principales: hojas sueltas, 1825-1972; folletos (incluyendo novenas), 1785-1969, y programas, 1819-1914. El sitio también permite la navegación fácil (por fecha, tipo, o tema), o por búsqueda detallada.

Después de alguna navegación a través de la colección encontré una buena variedad de temas tratados incluyendo la Iglesia Católica, las fuerzas armadas, la esclavitud, la educación, la vida social, la relación internacionales, y los políticos, entre otros.

Actualmente sólo hay alrededor de 60 documentos que pueden ser escaneados por palabra clave, pero la biblioteca esta buscando fondos con la esperanza de seguir ampliando este proyecto.

With some financial help from the National Endowment for the Humanities, digital-humanities professor Mary Flanagan is developing a game that will help add tags to some of Dartmouth College’s archival collections. Flanagan expects that students will be interested in the game which presents a player with an image for which they have to create “labels” for, and which will then be compared to the “labels” other players added (I presume in the hopes for increased accuracy). The game is expected to help reduce costs at the library.

The article in the Chronicle of Higher Education did not mention whether the collections involved in this project would only get student added labels or if these would be used alongside LCSH, nor did they mention any librarians, or more importantly, catalogers being involved with the development of this game. The project sounds a little like the PennTags system at UPenn, or the LOC Flickr account.

Flanagan eventually expects to release the game under an Open Source license so others may use it as well.

Con la ayuda financiera de la Fundación Nacional para las Humanidades, la profesora de humanidades digitales Mary Flanagan está desarrollando un juego que ayudará a añadir etiquetas a algunas de las colecciones de archivos de Dartmouth College. El artículo del Chronicle of Higher Education no mencionó si las colecciones que participan en este proyecto sólo recibirán las etiquetas añadidas por estudiantes o si además utilizarán puntos de acceso de la Biblioteca del Congreso (LCSH), ni se menciona la participación de algún bibliotecarios, o más importante aún, la participación de catalogadores profesionales en el desarrollo del juego. El proyecto suena un poco como el sistema de PennTags en UPenn, o la cuenta de Flickr de la LOC.

Flanagan espera lanzar el juego bajo una licencia de código abierto para que otros también puedan usarlo.

Today I spent the morning at Trinity College. After a quick tour of the campus I headed towards the library where I wanted to see the Book of Kells, and the the Long Room.

The Book of Kells is another one of these really old bibles, this one dating back to ca. 800, and it is currently bound as multiple volumes. The books are illuminated manuscripts containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. What sets this manuscript apart, is both it’s age, as well as the detail of the illustrations included. It derives its names from the Kells Abby where it was housed for many centuries.

El Libro de Kells es otra de estas bíblias muy antiguas, y se remonta a ca. 800; actualmente está encuadernada en varios volúmenes. Los libros son manuscritos iluminados que contienen los cuatro Evangelios del Nuevo Testamento. Lo que diferencia a este manuscrito, es su edad, así como el detalle de las ilustraciones incluidas. El manuscrito deriva su nombre Monasterio Kells donde se alojo por muchos siglos.

The room where the Book of Kells is located also contains a detailed exhibit explaining its history, how it was transcribed, how different pigments were created, and how the manuscript itself was made. There I found out that the Book of Kells was created for use on special occasions, and that is is full of textual errors.

After seeing the Book of Kells, I continued on to the Long Room, which is the main chamber of the original library. The room was built in 1850, originally with a flat ceiling, but it was remodeled in 1865 to include the vault ceiling that it is famous for today.

Today I got a “behind the scenes” tour of the National Library of Ireland! On my visit I found out that the library is quite a welcoming place to people from all around the world. Any local resident, or any person with a passport in hand can receive a library card, and use the library’s collection.

Hoy me dieron un tour “detrás de las escenas” de la Biblioteca Nacional de Irlanda! En mi visita me enteré que la biblioteca es un lugar acogedor para personas de todo el mundo. Cualquier residente local, o cualquier persona con pasaporte en mano pueden recibir una tarjeta de la biblioteca y utilizar la colección.

Being the National Library, the library is required to serve as a legal deposit for all the material published in Ireland. When I asked how these responsibilities worked in relation with the British Library’s duties as a national deposit for Ireland, I found out that Ireland has multiple legal deposits, several of them being college libraries. Since college libraries are not always open to the general public, the idea is that at least the copies held for deposit at the National Library will be available to everyone who wishes to use them.

Por ser la biblioteca nacional, la biblioteca funciona como depósito legal de todo el material publicado en Irlanda. The library is very popular during the summer months with American’s who come here to do genealogy work. For this type of research the library has holdings of parish records on microfilm with the original documents being held by individual parishes.

As would be expected the library also has the world’s largest collection on Irish writers, including a huge collection on W.B Yeats. It turns out that over the last several decades, the Yeats family has been gradually donating most of their material to the library, who in turn allows the world to access it.

Como era de esperar la biblioteca también tiene la colección más grande del mundo de escritores irlandeses, incluyendo una enorme colección de W.B. Yeats. Technological development is ongoing in the Library. They do have an online catalog, but this only holds records for material acquired since1990. The library is currently working on various digitization projects, including the recent launch of a new online site holding 20,000 photographs from the National Photographic Archives. Currently, there is no wi-fi in the building.

La tecnología en la biblioteca esta en proceso de desarollo. Si tienen un catálogo en línea, pero este sólo tiene registros de material adquiridos después de 1990. Los registros de fechas previas están en un catálogo de fichas, o en grandes tomos. La biblioteca también tiene un pequeño catálogo de fichas separado para material bíblico, y otro para  mapas. For some years now, the library has been working on organizing a number of exhibits and special events to attract visitors to the library. Every summer they organize something special on W.B. Yeats to coincide with it is an ongoing multi award winning exhibit in the library, paired with an online version of it, and a series of lunch time plays based on Yeats’ work. There is a second exhibit titled “Strangers to Citizens: The Irish in Europe”, about early migration to the UK, and continental Europe, much of it propelled by men’s desired to obtain a religious education. At other times of the year they organize lecture series, poetry readings, and other smaller exhibits.

Desde hace algunos años, la biblioteca ha estado organizando una serie de exposiciones y eventos especiales para atraer visitantes. Cada verano se organizan algo especial sobre W.B. Yeats. Este año es una exposición en la biblioteca, la cual ha ganado varios premios, junto con una versión en línea de la misma, y una serie teatral basadas en su obra, presentada la hora del almuerzo. Hay una segunda exposición titulada “Extraños a Ciudadanos: El irlandés en Europa”, sobre la primera migración hacia el Reino Unido,y  Europa continental, migración que en gran parte fue impulsada por hombres que deseaban obtener una educación religiosa. En otros momentos del año organizar series de conferencias, lecturas de poesía, y otras exposiciones más pequeñas.

The library is physically located on Kildare St. right between the National Museum, and the National Gallery, this last one holding a sizable collection of Jack Yeats‘ paintings. When I asked if the building had always been the National library, I found out that the library, along with the museum made up one family’s home!

The library’s photograph archive it located in a different part of town, but I stopped by there as well, and got to see a great exhibit titled “If Ever you go to Dublin Town” which gathered black and white photography is Dublin in the 1950 and 1960.

This afternoon I had an appointment for a tour of The British Library. The library itself is huge, taking up the better part of a city block, and having so much storage it has 5 underground levels full of books, plus additional storage at a remote location. Being the national library, it is in charge of keeping a copy of every single book published in the UK and Ireland; but by now this means more than 15 millions books, and counting.

But impressive numbers aside, the library also holds some very impressive items and special collections. As you walk into the building you can’t help but notice a glass column, full of books, reaching as far as the ceiling. This is known as the Kings Library; it’s the collection of King George III, and was donated to the nation by his son George IV back in 1823. The collection includes 65,000 volumes, 20,000 pamphlets, and over 400 manuscripts. And this is a working library, consulted daily by researches from around the world.

The library also includes The Sir John Ritblat Gallery: Treasures of the British Library; here you’ll find manuscripts for Alice in Wonderland, The Hours, compositions by the Beatles, Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook, illuminated manuscripts from India, Shakespeare’s first folio, Sultan Baybar’s Qu’ran, two Gutenberg Bibles, and in a small side room, the Magna Carta! (And by the way, you can actually page through many of these treasure through the library’s Virtual Books collection.)

The treasure room also holds the library’s holdings of the Codex Sinaiticus. This codex, written well over 1600 years ago contains the Christina bible in Greek, including the oldest complete copy of the New Testament. The codex has been divided into four pieces, with the British Library holding 694 pages of it, the Leipzig University Library holds 86 pages, the St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai holds 36 pages, and the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg holds 8 pages.

The British Library acquired its portion of the codex when it purchased it from the book dealer Ernest Maggs on December 27, 1933, The codex has been on public display at the library every since. Currently there is a project to digitally reunite the full codex, and the British Library has another display in one of the main corridors explaining the project.

Yes, the British Library was quite impressive, the only thing I regret was not being able to see that gorgeous round reading room I’ve seen in so many pictures. That reading room is in the British Museum, former home to the British Library, until the mid 90s when the outgrew the space, and moved to their current location. And I did go to the British Museum to see the famous reading room, but unfortunately it is closed to the public until 2012.

I went back to the library on Sunday to see the Henry VIII exhibit which was also very good. I spent close to 3 hours looking at the collection, which included old portraits, letters, diaries, legal documents, books, and even a knight’s helmet. The exhibit documented Henry VIII entire life, from a childhood reared by women, to being crowned as a teenager, along with lots of primary documentation on his many marriages, and as well as his political legacy.

Suffice to say that I’ve never before seen people line up, waiting for a library to open its doors on a Sunday morning.

La biblioteca es enorme, cubriendo la mayor parte de una manzana, y tiene tanta capacidad de almacenamiento que tiene 5 niveles subterráneos llenos de libros, además de almacenamiento en una ubicación remota. Siendo la biblioteca nacional, esta encargada de mantener una copia de cada libro publicado en el Reino Unido e Irlanda; por ahora esto significa más de 15 millones de libros, y creciendo cada día.

Impresionante, pero dejando los números de lado, la biblioteca también tiene algunas piezas muy impresionante en sus colecciones especiales. Volví a la biblioteca el domingo para ver la exposición de Henry VIII, también muy buena. Pasé cerca de 3 horas mirando la colección, que incluía retratos antiguos, cartas, diarios, documentos jurídicos, libros, e incluso un casco de caballero. La exposición documenta toda la vida, de Henry VIII, desde una infancia criados por mujeres, hasta ser coronado siendo todavía un adolescente, junto con un montón de documentación primaria en sus muchos matrimonios, así como su legado político.

Basta decir que nunca antes había visto a nadie haciendo fila, un domingo por la mañana, a la espera de que una biblioteca abra sus puertas.

Today the World Digital Library goes live! The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

¡Hoy la Biblioteca Digital Mundial se lanza en vivo! El proyecto ha estado en las planeación cerca de 4 años y fue inicialmente concebido por James Billington de la Biblioteca del Congreso de EE.UU. (LOC), y desarrollado por la UNESCO y la LOC. El sitio funcionará en siete idiomas y mostrará tesoros digitales de todo el mundo y a lo largo de los siglos. Se espera que el sitio ayudará a promover el entendimiento internacional y expandir el contenido de la web en idiomas diferentes al inglés, y de regiones no occidentales.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking  you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Esta realmente es una colección fascinante. Se puede buscar por región geográfica, período de tiempo, tema, institución, y el tipo de elemento. Financial advice at the public library? Apparently so. As unstable and scary as the financial landscape appears these days all of us seem to be looking for advice where we can find it. Smart investing@your library® initiative, a partnership between FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation and ALA (American Library Association) has established a number of grants to help libraries establish programs that will help the community learn about the economy. And let’s be clear, the librarians establishing these programs are not going to tell you what stock to buy, but they will help you learn about the larger system at play, how to keep track of new developments, and other general trends.

FINRA believes public libraries are an obvious place for these programs because they can reach so many people in the community, and so far the programs are getting good reviews. Newton Public Library, in Newton, MA used their grant money to set up a retirement planning club for women, back in 2008. The group initially provided a space for women of all ages to get together and discuss the larger economic situation, talk about the options they had, and serve as a support group to each other. Over time, the group has continued to grow, now including a number of men as well.

Interestingly these grant were started over two years ago, appearing to have been ahead of the curve which brought us this crisis. During 2009 this partnership has invested $882,000 in grants which were be offered to 12 recipients, who in turn have established different programs, some geared towards women, immigrant families, youth, seniors, or low-income families;

March is Women’s History Month in the USA and a number of universities, libraries, and other educational institutions are preparing events to celebrate. This month long celebration started with events for International Women’s Day, which falls every year on March 8th.

Many of the celebrations around this date wish to write women back into history and to make sure we remain part of the narrative for the future. The National Women’s History Project is an organization that works year around towards this end. This year their theme is “Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet“, an event which will honor women engaged in various effort to keep this planet green.

The USA Library of Congress (LOC) is celebrating by creating a website which highlights many of the treasures they hold related to women’s history. The site currently focuses on women’s contribution to the arts, offering us highlights to musicians, painters, photographer and writers; each with direct links to specific collections with in the library. There is also a section with resources to help teachers and students highlight women in the classroom.

Two more great resources for women’s history from the LOC include the America Women, and  Women at War. The Schlesinger Library is also another excellent collection on women in American history.

En EEUU Marzo es el Mes de la Mujer y universidades, bibliotecas y otras instituciones de educación están haciendo preparativos para celebrar. Este mes de celebración tiene origen con el Día Internacional de la Mujer, el cual se celebra cada 8 de Marzo.

Muchas de las celebraciones en esta fecha quieren recordar a las mujeres a lo largo de la historia, y asegurarse de que continuemos siendo parte de esta narrativa en el futuro. El proyecto Nacional de Historia de la Mujer (National Women’s History Project) es una organización que trabaja a lo largo del año hacia este fin. Este año están organizado eventos bajo el titulo de “Mujeres Tomando la Iniciativa para Salvar el Planeta,” el cual hará honor a mujeres comprometidas en la labor de mantener este planeta verde.

La Biblioteca del Congreso en EEUU esta celebrando con la creación de varios sitios web dedicados a resaltar algunos de los tesoros que tiene relacionados a la historia de las mujeres. Actualmente el sitio hace énfasis en las contribuciones que han hecho las mujeres en el campo del arte, ofreciéndonos muestras de mujeres en el campo de la música, pintura, fotografía, y escritura; cada entrada con enlaces directos a las colecciones correspondientes en la biblioteca. También hay una sección con recursos para maestros y estudiantes que deseen resaltar a las mujeres en el salón.

Dos recursos más de interés en la Biblioteca del Congreso con la colección Mujeres Americana (American Women), y Mujeres en la Guerra (Women at War). La biblioteca Schlesinger también es un recurso excelente en este campo.

The Perdita Project is a collaboration between the AHRB Center for Byzantine Cultural History, Nottingham Trent University, and The University of Warwick which gathers over 400 manuscripts collections from round the world on early modern (mostly British) women’s history. Some of the topics covered in this collection include poetry, religion, recipes, and autobiographies. The catalog can be searched either with or with out frames. The frame version allows for more search options, including searches by genre, first line of text, repository, places, dates, and language, among others. The catalog mainly offers the information that you might find in a manuscript collection’s finding aid, along with information of the repository who owns the actual manuscripts.

El Proyecto Perdita es una colección entre el AHRB Centro para la Cultura Histórica Bizantina, La Universidad Nottingham Trent, y la Universidad de Warwich, que reúne más de 400 colecciones de manuscritos alrededor del mundo sobre la historia moderna de la historia de las mujeres (sobre todo las mujeres Inglesas). Algunos de los temas cubiertos incluyen la poesía, religión, recetas, y autobiografías. Podrá hacer búsquedas en el catalogo con o sin marcos. La versión con marcos le dada mas opciones de búsqueda, incluyendo búsquedas por genero, la primera línea de un texto, lugar que tiene el manuscrito, lugares, fechas e idiomas, entre otros. Más que nada, el catalogo le ofrecerá la misma información que encontraría en un inventario de manuscrito, junto con información sobre donde se encuentra la colección.

If Darwin were still alive he’d be turning 200 today; and today just as during his lifetime his name still creates a buzz. All these years later there are still plenty of people who doubt his findings and who refuse to consider that our ancestors were apes. Newspapers all over have been aflutter this week with stories about people doubting Darwin’s theory of evolution, and questioning his legacy. Personally I don’t get how we can still be spending some much time and energy debating the issue. For those who choose to believe in creationism, you’re more than welcome, let’s just keep it clear that this is a purely religious perspective, which has nothing to do with science.

If you are in the Boston area, consider visiting the “Origin of Species” exhibit at the Houghton Library.

Si Darwin aun estuviera vivo, hoy estaría cumpliendo 200 años; y hoy, tal como en sus días su nombre todavía crea conmoción. Después de tantos años todavía encontramos cantidades de personas que dudan sus encuentros científicos, y se rehúsan a considerar que nuestros ancestros fueron monos. Esta semana he visto una cantidad de periódicos publicando artículos sobre las dudas que muchos tiene sobre la teoría de evolución, y quienes cuestionan su legado científico. Personalmente no entiendo como es que todavía estamos gastando tanto tiempo y energía debatiendo el caso. Para aquellos que escogen creer en otras teorías, bien puedan, pero tengamos claro que estas son perspectivas puramente religiosas y no tiene nada que ver con la ciencia.

Si esta en el área de Boston, considere visitar la exhibición “Origin of Species” en la biblioteca Houghton.
